I have received several emails from constituents concerned about the future of the UK travel industry.
On 20 March, the Chancellor announced a package of support to protect people’s jobs and incomes through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme. All UK employers are eligible to furlough their employees through the scheme providing they meet the eligibility requirements; this includes businesses in the travel industry. More information on the scheme can be found here.
I appreciate that furloughing employees may not be an option for travel businesses that need their employees to continue to support customers with postponing and cancelling their travel plans. In this instance, there are several options available to support businesses of all sizes, including grants for small businesses, the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme, changes to VAT payments and a business rates holiday. More information on the support available for businesses, including how to access a small business grant administered by Buckinghamshire Council, can be found here.
If you own or work for a travel business in my constituency and you have specific concerns relating to support for your business, please contact me and I will do what I can to help.
